Sawtooth Roof, Crouch End
Brief: Side Return and Rear Extension
Budget: Undisclosed
Scope: Householder Planning Application & Building Regulations
The owners of this property were passed our details by the owners of the flat above for whom we have completed a double dormer loft conversion. We were already familiar with the property and there were efficiencies which meant that we were the perfect match for the project.
The client, a graphic designer, has been considering the project for a year meaning they had developed ideas for each element of the project which they had precedent examples and sketches to support.
The plan design on which we settled matches the sketches and ideas that they had approached us with. The one notable difference is the step in the rear elevastion which we suggested. The extension is a large space and we suggested that by introdcing the stepped elevation it would help define the seperate uses of the space without sacraficing their quality.
We are currently preparing the project for planning which we hope to submit soon.
We are really excitied by this design. We have had the idea of the sawtooth roof for a while and have been waiting for an appropriate project to use it on. The context for this project are ideal as the neighbours have had an extension completed which is 4 meters high at the boundary which the extension will match. Internally the profile of the roof will hide the long beam required to support the existing 1st floor property. This ceiling profile will continue down the length of the extension and add an element of individuality that we haven’t seen before.
The main aspiration of the project is to frame views of the Oak tree at the bottom of the garden. For this reason we have designed the rear elevation to be a square edged timber cladding. The cladding above the door and window head will follow the pitch of the roofs which add an element of plafulness to the design.
